Step 19: Preparing for Your Move

Preparing for Your Move

As you have moved beyond the inspection period and appraisal, you are getting closer to a “Clear to Close” from the buyer's lender and it’s time to start preparing for your move!

Remember, you need to be completely moved out of the home before closing occurs. I recommend moving out the day before closing or very early in the morning the day of closing.

Oftentimes we won’t know an official closing date and time until a few days beforehand. This can lead to a lot of frustration, but for now, plan on the closing date indicated on your contract. You can certainly get a start on packing and finding out which utility companies service your new address and alerting your current utility companies that you will be moving and to take your name off the accounts on the closing day.

I utilize a service called Updater and will send you an invite a week or so before your anticipated move. Updater is a time-saving tool that helps you organize and complete many moving-related tasks. Updater is completely free for you. You can use it to forward your mail, reserve a reputable moving company, set up your utilities, connect TV and internet, update your accounts and records, secure your insurance, send digital moving announcements, and more.

If you prefer a more DIY approach, I will send my moving checklist that you can use to help keep you organized.
